The Liz Prine Fund was created in 1982 by the family and friends of Elizabeth Erskine Prine, who died that year at age 44 after an eight-month battle with cancer. Liz had served on the board of the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh and had been one of the youngest women ever elected to the national board of the YWCA.
Liz consistently advocated for a more aggressive approach to empowering women, beyond providing housing and recreational facilities. She believed the YWCA must immerse itself in the economic, racial, and social problems that were preventing many young women from sharing in the opportunities which should have been available to them. The family established the Liz Prine Fund as a memorial fund of the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh.
The Fund provides one-time grants of up to $500 to women who are participating in YWCA programs to meet needs that pose significant barriers to women’s ongoing journey to self-sufficiency.
