Maintenance Assistant III

Employment Type: Full Time

Reports to:   Director of Building Services
FLSA Classification/Job Grade:  Non-Exempt/5
Hiring Range: $11.56 – $14.56/hr

Maintain the HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, painting, snow removal and using the Work Order System.  Performs work of routine difficulty maintenance, general repairs and maintenance, carpentry, minor renovations and preventive maintenance for the YW Homes as well as other YWCA Greater Pittsburgh facilities.   Ensure safe, cost-effective and timely maintenance of properties with an emphasis on preparations for re-renting vacated apartments, emergency repairs and preventive maintenance.


Associates, Business or Technical Degree with two (2) years of relevant experience or High School Diploma or equivalent with three (3) years of relevant experience.  Valid Pennsylvania drivers’ license.


Candidate must possess advanced knowledge of safety and emergency procedures, HVAC, plumbing repairs, painting, small carpentry projects, and electrical repairs.  Maintenance knowledge for residential equipment and ability to replace locks and alarms, moving furniture and snow removal is required.


  • Assist Building Services Director with inspecting work areas to determine type of work required and materials and equipment to be used

  • Knowledge and repair of HVAC.
  • Repair plumbing fixtures: faucets, hand valves, braids, and cartridges.
  • Perform and complete small carpentry projects, painting, and wall repairs.
  • Replace light bulbs and perform small electrical repairs.
  • Replace locks and reset alarms.
  • Assembles, moves and stores furniture and furnishings.
  • Work with the Housing Manager and Building Services Director by conducting assessments of YW Homes properties to identify needed improvement and repairs.
  • Accurately maintains required building service logs and work orders.
  • Operates company vehicle to include occasional deliveries and pick-ups.
  • Maintains interior and exterior grounds to include all seasonal landscaping and snow removal.
  • Works in a safe manner and recognizes unsafe situations. Takes appropriate action to ensure safety of themselves and others in building.
  • Maintains high levels of consumer satisfaction.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality when working with sensitive and personal client, vendor, employee and contract information.
  • Must effectively deal with sensitive information and occurrences.
  • Will work in conjunction with co-workers and management to achieve Affirmative Action goals.
  • Displays consistent professionalism and courtesy when interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Promotes and supports the mission, imperative, values and goals of the YWCA maintaining high performance standards.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director within the scope of Building Services.


  • Regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day.
  • Frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.
  • Occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, or walk for various lengths of time throughout the day
  • Ability to utilize computer equipment to complete daily work responsibilities
  • Daily work in a residential/office facility environment and with frequent travel to client sites with exposure to weather conditions
  • Available to work 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week or more as necessary to meet Association objectives.
  • Ability to travel for meetings, agency trainings and other miscellaneous work assignments within or outside of Allegheny County.
