Pre-K Counts Teacher

JOB SUMMARY:

The Teacher works collaboratively to create a stimulating and safe learning environment and oversees classroom planning, Creative Curriculum implementation, and evaluation as well as administrative operations in a classroom with a maximum of 16 children.  The Pre-K Counts Teacher is responsible for maintaining high-quality, early childhood performance standards that focus on: developmentally appropriate practices, PA Early-Learning standards, compliance with all regulations (DHS, PA Pre-K Counts, NAEYC and OCDEL requirements for licensure, environmental rating scales, and accreditation), excellent customer-services skills, and an ability to communicate successfully to all staff, children, families, and administration.  All eligible candidates must possess a BA/BS in Early Childhood Education and must possess a current Pennsylvania Early Childhood Education Certification and provide proof of this upon interviewing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and Pennsylvania Early Childhood Education (ECE) teaching certificate from an accredited college or university.
  • Candidate must convert the Instructional Level I certificate to an Instructional Level II certificate within six (6) years from the time of initial service as an Instructional Level I teacher in the Program.
  • Act 33/34 clearances, fingerprinting and criminal background checks. 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of ECE curriculum and developmentally appropriate practices for 3-5 year olds.
  • Knowledge of PA Early Learning Standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with parents/guardians.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare a detailed weekly lesson plan with an appropriate balance of independent and teacher-directed activities that are developmentally appropriate.
  • Assure that materials and equipment are available to support planned activities.
  • Record observations of children as they are engaged in classroom activities throughout the day.
  • Works on goals after the completion of the ECERS evaluation of the program.
  • Observe and evaluate student progress utilizing the Work Sampling System.
  • Prepare weekly individualized plans for each child based on needs as reflected in assessments and observations.
  • Organize the classroom in a functional, clean, neat and attractive way that encourages children to use materials as independently as is appropriate. 
  • Conduct an initial parent conference with each family within a month of enrolling in the classroom and at least twice a year annually.
  • Prepare written developmental assessments for each child at least three times per year; document family conferences following each assessment.
  • Enforce safety rules, and promptly complete required paperwork in the event of an injury involving children or staff.
  • Administer medication if needed, in accordance with DHS regulations.
  • Assist with planning and preparing nutritious snacks and consult with families to promote children’s health and nutrition.
  • Supervise all full- and part-time staff, practicum students and volunteers working in the classroom.
  • Conduct regular classroom teacher meetings, at least twice monthly, for the purpose of discussing the needs of individual children, lesson planning, program evaluation and problem-solving.
  • Prepare daily notes to keep families informed about the curriculum and activities of the class, each child’s individual progress, and center-wide events.
  • Ensure that classroom staff coverage follows DHS guidelines; remain on duty if necessary to assure recommended child: staff ratios.
  • Oversee the record keeping activities required of the classroom and ensure the completion of anecdotal records, physical observation, transition reports, meal count sheets, developmental observations and reports, and any other required DHS, NAEYC, OCDEL, Keystone Stars or other reports in a timely fashion.
  • Review supplies needed for successful implementation of lesson plans and to meet accreditation standards and inform the department director of deficits.
  • Attend staff meetings and events as required including periodic evening and weekend meetings.
  • Participate in mandatory professional development opportunities; maintain professional development documentation with annuals goals.  
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality when working with sensitive and personal client, vendor, employee and contract information.
  • Display consistent professionalism and courtesy when interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Promote and support the mission, imperative, values and goals of the YWCA maintaining high performance standards.
  • Performs other such duties assigned within the scope of the Early Learning, Development, and Education Center Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift, carry and otherwise move up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to sit, stands, bends, kneel, reach, push, pull or walk for various lengths of time throughout the day.
  • Ability to utilize computer equipment to complete daily work responsibilities.
  • Ability to operate fax/copy machines, telephone, calculator and general office equipment on a daily basis.
  • Daily work in an office environment with occasional exposure to weather conditions while attending off site meetings.
  • Available to work 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week or more as necessary to meet program objectives.
  • Ability to travel for meetings, agency trainings and other miscellaneous work assignments within or outside of Allegheny County.
