Director of Children and Youth Development & Education

Starting Salary Range:  $ 41,064 – $ 47,223/yr                           
Full Salary Range:  $ 41,064 - $ 66,112/yr

The Director of Homewood Brushton Child Care is responsible for the management of the Early Education Child Care facility in Homewood-Brushton and its staff.  Duties include responsibility for hiring/supervising appropriate staff, ensuring the state licensing; Keystone STARS and NAEYC accreditation are maintained.  The Homewood Brushton Child Care is responsible for recruiting and maintaining children to the maximum enrollment level, preparing an annual budget, billing the appropriate sources and collecting payments, as warranted.


Bachelor’s Degree in ECE or a related field including 30 ECE credits with at least five (5) years of relevant experience and of which two (2) are at a supervisory or management level or a Master’s Degree in ECE or a related field including 30 ECE credits with three (3) years of experience and at least one (1) year in a supervisory or management level.  Completion of the PA Director’s Credential is preferred.  Experience in managing a day care facility, comprehending and applying the PA Keystone STARS standards, proposal writing, budget development and record keeping are also preferred.


  • Assures the site is in total compliance with the licensing requirements, as regulated by the relevant State agencies and that the site receives its operating license annually; includes NAEYC & PA Keystone STARS accreditations.
  • Works with (Early Childhood Initiative) organizations/community groups that align with the YWCA mission.
  • Develops and manages an annual program plan and budget for the department.
  • Maintains up-to-date information on early childhood issues and trends to keep programs current and to provide up-dated training opportunities for all appropriate staff.
  • Assures that developmentally appropriate programming is carried out by the staff responsible for care in each age group.
    • Oversees the marketing of the site and its services to maximize enrollment.
    • Hires, supervises and appraises all staff delivering childcare services at the site including teachers, clerical staff, senior aides and other resource persons and volunteers. 
  • Assures that all recruitment and hiring is done in accordance with the affirmative action policy at the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh.
  • Prepares proposals and descriptive summaries of programs.
  • Assures that records essential for monitoring and evaluation of programs and reports to funders, committees, supervisors and Board of Directors, are kept.
  • Works in cooperation with staff located in YWCA centers and other community sites where YWCA program is offered.
  • Works in coalition with schools, key community agencies, groups and organizations to implement program/advocacy efforts.
  • Works to maintain and improve the YWCA’s public image and positive relationships with community organizations, through attendance at public events or speaking engagements.
  • Provides access to training for staff and volunteers working with children, as needed or required.
  • Provides direct service teaching to selected components of the program.
  • Works with other programs leaders to ensure quality programming for clients and their children, confer on grant opportunities and coordinate site activities and space access as needed.
  • Ensures the facility is up to code and in a well maintained condition at all times.
  • Oversees all childcare policies to include; medicine administration, transport, child pick up, and emergency information collection.
  • Attends staff meetings as required and supervisory conferences as scheduled.
  • Maintains high levels of consumer satisfaction and positive relationships with parents and other stakeholders.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality when working with sensitive and personal client, vendor, employee and contract information.
  • Must effectively deal with sensitive information and occurrences.
  • Will work in conjunction with co-workers and management to achieve Affirmative Action goals.
  • Displays consistent professionalism and courtesy when interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Promotes and supports the mission, imperative, values and goals of the YWCA while maintaining high performance standards.
  • Participates in YWCA professional development opportunities, successfully implementing new skills, knowledge and procedures.
  • Performs other such duties within the scope of the Child Care Department as required.


  • Ability to lift, carry and otherwise move up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to sit, stands, bends, kneel, reach, push, pull or walk for various lengths of time throughout the day.
  • Ability to utilize computer equipment to complete daily work responsibilities.
  • Ability to operate fax/copy machines, telephone, calculator and general office equipment on a daily basis.
  • Daily work in an office environment with occasional exposure to weather conditions while attending off site meetings.
  • Available to work 7 hours per day and/or 35 hours per week or more as necessary to meet Association objectives.
  • Ability to travel for meetings, agency trainings and other miscellaneous work assignments within or outside of Allegheny County.
