eliminating racism empowering women YWCA greater pittsburgh

YW Homes, Inc.

In January of 1999, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh formed YW Homes, Inc. a non-profit subsidiary corporation with a mission “To provide affordable housing choices for low- and moderate-income single parent families and to promote racially diverse communities.” YWCA took on this mission in response to the lack of affordable housing opportunities in Allegheny County, the increasing racial segregation of Allegheny County communities brought to light by the Sanders Consent Decree (pdf) and the lack of housing choice in neighborhoods with quality schools, diverse populations, and access to transportation and jobs for low to moderate income families.

YW Homes consists of ten single-family homes that are located in the first tier suburban communities of Swissvale, Edgewood, Ingram, Baldwin, and Brentwood.

The YW believes that when we provide housing choices to low-income families and persons of color where none previously existed, we are directly eliminating discriminatory housing practices and opening doors to new possibilities.
